Nanping - Nanping

Japanese: 南平 - なんへい
Nanping - Nanping

A prefecture-level city in central Fujian Province, China. Located along the midstream of the Min River, it governs two city districts, including Jianyang, and five counties, and acts as the governing agent for three county-level cities, including Wuyishan (as of 2016). It has a population of 3,192,000 (2014), including over 20,000 Sheo people. It developed as a key transportation point along the Min River valley, and was the prefecture of Yanping Prefecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was incorporated as a city in 1957, and became a prefecture-level city in 1994. It developed after the construction of the Yingtan Line (Yingtan-Xiamen) and the Nanfu Line (now the Waifuku Line, Waiyang-Fuzhou). The Hefei-Fuzhou high-speed railway (Hefei-Fuzhou) was opened in 2015. In 1958, a paper mill using nearby wood as raw material was built, and the city has since become one of the country's leading producers of newsprint. Other industries include chemical industries producing ink, paint, fertilizer, agricultural machinery, steel, and cement. In addition to cedar lumber, major forest products include pine resin, bamboo shoots, and palm. The city has reserves of the rare metals tantalum and niobium, totaling 23.36 million tonnes, the largest in China and second in Asia (2015).
