The large intestine is the final part of the digestive tract following the small intestine, and is so named because it is thicker than the small intestine. The large intestine is divided into the cecum, colon (ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon), and rectum (Figure 1). Its length varies from individual to individual, but in adults it is about 1.5 m.
