A deciduous tree of the elm family (illustration) that grows as a large, imposing tree in the northern part of Japan. It is said that Ainu ancestral deity Ainurakuru was born from Princess Harunire and the god of thunder. It is also simply called elm. It can reach a height of 30m and a diameter of 1m, with gray-brown bark on the trunk and deep vertical cracks. It spreads out widely and forms a large crown. The cork layer on the branches sometimes develops into bumps and fins. The leaves are alternate, obovate or obovate-elliptical, abruptly pointed, irregular at the base, 3-12cm long, with 7-13 pairs of parallel lateral veins and duplicate serrations on the edges.

北地では堂々とした大木のみられるニレ科の落葉高木（イラスト）。アイヌの祖神アイヌラックルはハルニレ姫と雷神の間から産まれたと伝承されている。単にニレともいう。高さ30m，直径1mに達し，幹の樹皮は灰褐色で縦にやや深い割れ目がある。広く枝を張り，大きな樹冠をつくる。枝にコルク層が発達して，こぶやひれをつくることがある。葉は互生し，倒卵形ないし倒卵状楕円形で，先が急にとがり，基部は左右不整，長さ3～12cmで，7～13対の平行な側脈があり，縁に重鋸歯がある。
