A Greek novelist active around the 2nd century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was born in Alexandria and is said to have later converted to Christianity and become a bishop, but this is not clear. He is also said to have written biographies of great people and treatises on the etymology of words, but these works have not survived. The only work known to him is an eight-volume novel entitled The Story of Leucippe and Cleitophon. It tells the story of a young couple who are in love but are separated by a twist of fate, and who continue to wander from place to place, enduring various hardships, until they are finally united in love.
