Refers to the space between two rooms. In shrine architecture, it refers to the space between the main hall and the worship hall, particularly the space between the front hall and rear hall in Hachiman-zukuri style and the space between the main hall and the worship hall in Gongen-zukuri style. In Gongen-zukuri style shrines, the space between the main hall and the worship hall is lowered by one step and has a dirt floor or stone paving, so it is also called the Ishi-no-ma. Kitano Shrine was rebuilt in 1607, but records show that a Ishi-no-ma existed at the end of the Heian period.
