Samukawa Nyudo Notes

Japanese: 寒川入道筆記 - さむかわにゅうどうひっき

A rakugo story. Author unknown. Completed in 1613 (Keicho 18). Manuscript, 1 volume. This work can be said to be the origin of the short stories (kobanashi) that were popular in the Edo period, and although the author is said to be Matsunaga Teitoku, this is not certain. However, it was likely written by a renga poet of the time. It contains many stories related to renga and kyoka, as well as various short humorous tales, and at the end of the volume, there is a section titled "About riddles," which lists over 100 riddles to solve. Kyoka and puzzles were popular in the early Edo period. [Noda Hisao]

噺本。作者不明。1613年(慶長18)成立。写本，1巻。江戸時代に流行した小咄（こばなし）の祖とも言うべきもので，著者は松永貞徳と言われているが確かではない。しかし当時の連歌師の手に成ったものであろう。連歌や狂歌に関する話，種々の短い滑稽話が多く，巻末に〈謎詰（なぞづめ）の事〉と題して，謎解きの問題が100以上並べてある。狂歌や謎は，江戸時代初期に流行したものである。【野田寿雄】
