Benzyl chloride - benzyl chloride

Also known as chloromethylbenzene or α-chlorotoluene, this is a colorless _liquid with a pungent odor that is obtained by passing chlorine gas through toluene under light irradiation, replacing one hydrogen atom in the methyl group _-CH3 of toluene ( _{C6H5CH3 )} with a chlorine atom.

Depending on the reaction conditions, further chlorination can produce _{dichloromethylbenzene} (benzal chloride) _{C6H5CHCl2 and} trichloromethylbenzene _C6H5CCl3 . The chlorine atom of benzyl chloride can be easily substituted with various functional groups, so it is used as a benzylating agent to introduce _{the benzyl} group _C6H5CH2- into many organic compounds, and as an _intermediate for triphenylmethane dyes. It is hydrolyzed to produce benzyl alcohol. It must be handled with care as _it is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.

クロロメチルノベンゼン、α(アルファ)-クロロトルエンともいう。光を照射しながらトルエン中に塩素ガスを流し、トルエンC₆H₅CH₃のメチル基-CH₃の水素原子1個を塩素原子と置換することにより得られる、刺激臭のある無色液体。

　反応条件によりさらに塩素化が進行すると、ジクロロメチルノベンゼン（塩化ベンザル）C₆H₅CHCl₂、トリクロロメチルノベンゼンC₆H₅CCl₃が生成する。塩化ベンジルの塩素原子は種々の官能基で置換されやすいので、多くの有機化合物にベンジル基C₆H₅CH₂-を導入するベンジル化剤、またトリフェニルメタン系染料中間体として用いられる。加水分解するとベンジルアルコールをつくる。皮膚、目、粘膜を刺激するので取扱いに注意する必要がある。
