Benzyl chloride - benzyl chloride

Benzyl chloride - benzyl chloride

Also known as chloromethylbenzene or α-chlorotoluene, this is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor that is obtained by passing chlorine gas through toluene under light irradiation, replacing one hydrogen atom in the methyl group -CH3 of toluene ( C6H5CH3 ) with a chlorine atom.

Depending on the reaction conditions, further chlorination can produce dichloromethylbenzene (benzal chloride) C6H5CHCl2 and trichloromethylbenzene C6H5CCl3 . The chlorine atom of benzyl chloride can be easily substituted with various functional groups, so it is used as a benzylating agent to introduce the benzyl group C6H5CH2- into many organic compounds, and as an intermediate for triphenylmethane dyes. It is hydrolyzed to produce benzyl alcohol. It must be handled with care as it is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
