Fan Daosheng - Fan Daosheng

Japanese:
Fan Daosheng - Fan Daosheng

A Buddhist sculptor from Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China, who came to Japan in the early Edo period. His pen name was Sekiho or Seal Officer. He was invited by the Ming monk Ingen Ryuki to visit Uji when Obakusan Manpuku-ji Temple was being built, and he came to Japan in 1659 (Manji 2). He created Buddha statues at Fukusai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki, and from around 1663 (Kanbun 3) he was responsible for most of the statues at Manpuku-ji Temple, including Shaka, Anan, Kasyapa, and the Eighteen Arhats in the Buddha Hall of the temple. His style had a strong late Ming style, and as a novelty it spread for a time among Buddhist sculptors, but it did not have a major impact. He returned to Japan in 1664, and came again in September 1670, but was not allowed to enter the country, and died in Nagasaki on November 3 of the same year. His grave is at Sofukuji Temple.
