Reynault, E. (English spelling) ReynaultE

...The magic lantern, which uses optics to project images in large size, was invented in southern Europe in the 17th century, and the first documented device was the Laterna Magica (magic lamp) invented by Kircher, who introduced it in his book The Great Art of Light and Shadow (1646). However, unlike modern magic lanterns, the original projected an upright image by placing a plate outside the light source and lens. This device was used as an attraction for Christian evangelism or as a spectacle to amaze the public. The technique of projecting images in large size can be seen in the "Magic Theater" created by GBdella Porta in the mid-16th century by attaching a lens to a camera obscura, but unlike the magic lantern, which projects an image from a small hole in a box with a light source inside, the system drew external light into a dark box.
