A state in northern Brazil. It is the country's largest state, and is a typical underdeveloped region bordering Peru and Bolivia to the west and Venezuela to the north. It has an area of 1,577,820.2 square kilometers (1996) and a population of 2,812,557 (2000). The state capital is Manaus. Most of the state is covered by tropical rainforest, and the population density is extremely sparse at 1.8 people per square kilometer. Many people live along rivers, and some indigenous people are not registered in the national census. In the early 20th century, the state prospered through wild rubber harvesting, but most of the residents make a living by hunting, fishing, and primitive agriculture. The main products are wood for furniture, wild rubber, nuts, vanilla, and other harvested materials. Industrial development plans are underway in Manaus.
