Kiyochika

...He is said to have studied Japanese painting under Kawanabe Kyosai and Shibata Zeshin, photography under Shimooka Renjo, and Western painting under C. Wirgman. From 1876 to 1881, he produced a series of woodblock prints entitled "Famous Places of Tokyo," which he himself called "light paintings." These mixed landscape and genre paintings of the Meiji period (1603-1868) and new styles blended together to create works that resonated with the masses, solidifying Kiyochika's name as a printmaker. While this work uses the techniques of ukiyo-e printmaking, it also incorporates the light and shadow and perspective of Western painting, and in this respect Kiyochika can be said to be the founder of modern Japanese printmaking. ...
