…In the second half of the 19th century, many small kingdoms were separated in Malaya, and internal conflicts were constant due to the struggle between several secret societies organized among Chinese workers in the tin mines. Britain, which had maintained a policy of non-intervention until then, changed its policy to active intervention in September 1873 and appointed Andrew Clarke (1824-1902) as Governor of the Straits Settlements. In January 1874, Clarke invited leaders of Chinese secret societies and influential people of the Kingdom of Perak to the gunboat Plutoh, anchored off the coast of Pangkor Island, and determined the areas of control for the secret societies. …
