Japanese: 四箇法要 - しかほうよう

A part of a Buddhist ceremony. It consists of four types of chanting: singing, scattering flowers, Buddhist chanting, and the use of a staff. It is a part of a Buddhist ceremony that goes beyond the restrictions of religion and is widely used in a variety of Buddhist ceremonies. It is often used in ceremonies that focus on lectures and discussions, and in Nara Buddhism it is also used as another name for a lecture ceremony. The oldest record is the Great Buddha Opening Ceremony at Todaiji Temple (752). In Heian Buddhism, the four memorial services at the Jorakue (Nirvana Ceremony) of the Shingon sect are representative. There are two memorial services in contrast to this.

仏教儀式の部分名称。唄 (ばい) ，散華 (さんげ) ，梵音 (ぼんのん) ，錫杖 (しゃくじょう) の4種の声明 (しょうみょう) から成る。宗教の制約をこえて，広くいろいろな法会 (ほうえ) に通用する法要部分。おもに講式や論議などを中心とする法会に用いられることが多く，奈良仏教では，講問法要の別名としても使われる。東大寺大仏開眼供養会 (752) が最も古い記録。平安仏教では，真言宗の常楽会 (涅槃会) の四箇法要などが代表的。なお，これと対立するものに二箇法要がある。
