〘Noun〙 A general term for plants in the genus Corydalis of the Papaveraceae family that have purple or white flowers and underground tubers. There are varieties such as Corydalis japonicus, Corydalis japonica, and Corydalis serrata. The dried underground stems are used as a painkiller. [Tashiki hen (1631)] *Onna Juhoki (Genroku 5th year) (1692) 3 "A miracle cure for difficult childbirth. For baby's pillow pain, powder a medicine called Engosaku and use it with sake."

〘名〙 ケシ科キケマン属の草のうち、花が紫色ないし白色で地下に塊茎をもつものの総称。ジロボウエンゴサク、ヤブエンゴサク、エゾエンゴサクなどの種類がある。地下茎を干したものは鎮痛剤とされる。〔多識編(1631)〕※女重宝記(元祿五年)(1692)三「難産の妙薬〈略〉児枕痛(あとはらいたむ)には延胡索(ヱンゴサク)といふ薬を粉にして酒にて用ゆべし」
