A research institute is an organization whose purpose is to explore knowledge and the possibility of its practical application, and currently there are a wide variety of research institutes in existence and in operation. That is, there are a wide variety of research institutes, divided by field (humanities/social sciences, science and technology), by body that established them (national/public/private), by type of establishment (independent/affiliated), by content (basic/applied), etc. This section focuses on science and technology-related research institutes and provides a historical overview of their formation and development.
[Bacon's Dream]
In his unfinished utopian tale, New Atlantis (1627), the 17th-century philosopher Francis Bacon refers to the Academy of Salomon, which could be considered a huge national research institute.
