A man who pretended to be Dmitry (1582-91), the youngest son of Russian Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible). There were two generations of Dmitry I and Dmitry II. Dmitry I (?-1606) is thought to have been the deacon Grigory Otrepiev, who fled from the Chudov Monastery, but he introduced himself as Prince Dmitry in Poland. Supported by many who were dissatisfied with the Moscow and Polish governments, he invaded Moscow territory in the autumn of 1604. In response, peasant uprisings occurred all over Russia, and many government troops defected or fled. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
