…When Western Europe was perceived as a “power,” derogatory terms for Westerners were born. At the time of the treaty revision, Westerners were described as “red-headed slaves,” “monsters,” and “beasts,” and during the Pacific War they were described as “devilish Americans and British.” The process in which Westerners became “foreigners” throughout modern Japan was also the process in which Asian people were expelled from the realm of “foreigners.”
