Le Cid (English spelling)

...A play by the French playwright Corneille. A tragicomedy in verse in five acts. It premiered in 1637. It was based on the play The Youth of El Cid by the Spanish playwright Guillén de Castro, but Corneille removed the redundant parts, made the plot simple and clear, and focused on the psychology and conflicts of the characters, marking a step towards French classical drama. The play is set in 11th-century Seville. The protagonist, Rodrigue, has his family's honor tarnished by the father of his lover, Chimène, and after much anguish, he overcomes his love with heroic willpower and defeats his lover's father in a duel. At one point, Chimène also seeks his death as her enemy, but instead their love grows deeper and they vow to spend their future together. ...
