...The country's name "Bulgaria" comes from the Bulgars.

The new state had its capital at Pliska (now northeast of Shumen) in eastern Bulgaria and extended along both banks of the Danube north of the Balkan Mountains. The Byzantine Empire responded to Bulgaria in both hard and soft ways, sometimes seeking cooperation against foreign enemies and sometimes launching attacks.
