A mushroom of the Ascocystacean Sclerotinia order, Polymorphales, and Polymorphaceae family. It grows in large numbers near the base of dead broadleaf trees and standing trees. Its scientific name is Latin, with xylaria meaning "woody" and polymorpha meaning "variously shaped," and as the name suggests, it varies widely in shape. It is about 3-7cm tall, and is entirely made of black carbonaceous material, with a pestle-like, rod-like, or head-like shape and a hard appearance. The inside of the fruiting body is hollow and white, and the black part of the head is filled with countless spore-forming organs (ascocysts), with tiny, dot-like openings on the surface.
