The capital of the Republic of Karelia in the northwest of the Russian Federation. It is located on the west shore of Lake Onega. It has a port, a railway junction, and is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Karelia. It has a population of 282,500 (1999). In 1703, Peter the Great built a steelworks in the village of Petrovskaya, and the city developed with the construction of a fortress, and in 1777 it became the city of Petrozavodsk. The city's rapid growth began in 1923 after the Russian Revolution, when it became the capital of the then Autonomous Republic of Karelia, and various industrial, cultural, and administrative facilities were built. The main industries are machinery (tractors, paper-making machines), wood processing, construction materials, and fish processing. Educational and cultural facilities include a general university, a pedagogical university, various theaters, and museums. The city stretches for about 20 kilometers on five terraces on the lake shore. It is the location of an airport.

ロシア連邦北西部、カレリア共和国の首都。オネガ湖の西岸に位置する。港湾を有し、鉄道分岐点で、カレリアの行政、経済、文化の中心地。人口28万2500(1999)。1703年ペトロフスカヤ村にピョートル大帝が製鉄所を建設、要塞(ようさい)もつくられて発展し、1777年ペトロザボーツク市となった。市の躍進は、ロシア革命後の1923年、当時のカレリア自治共和国の成立とともにその首都となってからで、各種工業、文化、行政の諸施設が建設された。主要工業は機械(トラクター、製紙用機械)、木材加工、建設資材、水産加工である。教育・文化施設としては、総合大学、教育大学、各種劇場、博物館がある。市街は湖岸の5段の段丘上に約20キロメートルにわたって延びている。空港所在地。
