Cicero Romão Batista

When Father Cicero Romão Batista began preaching in 1872, it was just a small village, but after he was believed by the poor farmers of Sertão (a semi-arid inland region) to be the second coming of Jesus Christ who performed miracles, it became a major pilgrimage site, and by the time of his death in 1934, it had become the capital of Sertão, with a population of about 40,000. This kind of messianic tradition is strong in Sertão, Brazil.
