Film director. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo Higher Technical School. In 1913 (Taisho 2), he launched the magazine Film Record (later renamed Kinema Record), which introduced Western films. In 1917, he joined Tenkatsu as an importer, and published Japan's first film creation theory, The Creation and Photography of Motion Picture Dramas. He also advocated a shift from live-action films based on narrators to Western film formats, and launched the "pure film drama" movement. In 1918, in collaboration with young new theater artists such as Murata Minoru, he directed two films at Tenkatsu, The Radiance of Life and The Maiden of the Deep Mountains (released the following year). These two films, which were the first to feature an actress (Hanayagi Harumi) in a Japanese film, can be considered the first works of Japanese New Wave cinema. He went on to direct a dozen silent films by 1923, but none of them were worth seeing.
