Crown Prince/Spring Prince - Togu

Japanese: 東宮∥春宮 - とうぐう

The residence of the Crown Prince, and by extension, another name for the Crown Prince. Since the east corresponds to spring in the theory of the five elements, it is also written as Spring Palace. According to the Togu Personnel Order, a distinction is made between the Togu, or the tutors and scholars who assist the Crown Prince, and the Spring Palace Office, which is the Crown Prince's household organization. Examples found in the Six National Histories and other sources generally follow this distinction, and when referring to the Crown Prince himself, Togu is often written as Spring Palace. According to the "Yoshinobu Kanshoki," Togu refers to the throne room, and Spring Palace refers to the government office, and they were not originally alternate names for the Crown Prince, but the two were mixed up and the Crown Prince was written as Togu and Spring Palace, and read as "Togu," and Spring Palace was read as "Haru no Miya" in kun'in.

皇太子の居所，転じて皇太子の別称。五行説で東は春にあたるところから，春宮とも記す。東宮職員令によると，東宮すなわち皇太子の輔導にあたる傅･学士と，皇太子の家政機関たる春宮坊とを区別している。六国史等に見える実例もおおむねこの区別に従っており，皇太子その人をさす場合は東宮と書かれることが多い。《官職要解》によると，東宮は御座所を，春宮は官司をさし，もとは皇太子の別称ではなかったが，これを混用して皇太子を東宮，春宮と書いて〈とうぐう〉と読み，また春宮を訓で〈はるのみや〉と読んだものという。
