[ I ] Disulfur dichloride: S 2 Cl 2 (135.04). Usually, sulfur chloride refers to S 2 Cl 2. It is obtained by reacting molten sulfur with chlorine. It is a fuming amber or yellow-red oily liquid. It has Cl-SS-Cl molecules, S-Cl 2.057 Å, S-S 1.931 Å. ∠SS-Cl 108.2°. The internal rotation angle is 85°. Its melting point is -80°C, its boiling point is 138°C. Its density is 1.69 g cm -3 . It is soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. It is hydrolyzed with water to produce S, SO 2 , and HCl. It is used as a chlorinating agent in the manufacture of insecticides, dyes, synthetic rubber, etc. It is a toxic irritant that can cause damage to the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, etc. [CAS 10025-67-9] [ II ] Sulfur dichloride: SCl2 (102.97). Obtained by reacting S2Cl2 with chlorine. Dark red liquid with pungent odor. The gas molecule is a broken line Cl-S-Cl, S-Cl2.015 Å. ∠Cl-S-Cl102.7°. Melting point -122 °C, boiling point 59.6 °C. Density 1.62 g cm -3 . Soluble in hexane. Decomposes in water to produce H2S , SO2 , and H2SO4 . Used as a solvent, chlorinating agent, rubber vulcanizer, insecticide, etc. Vapor is irritating to mucous membranes and is toxic. [CAS 10545-99-0] [ III ] Sulfur tetrachloride: SCl4 (173.88). It is obtained by reacting SCl2 with chlorine at -75°C. It is an unstable yellow crystal. Its structure is thought to be SCl3 + Cl- . It melts at -30°C and begins to decompose, becoming SCl2 and Cl2 . It is hydrolyzed with water to become SO2 and HCl. [CAS 13451-08-6] [ IV ] Polysulfane dichloride: SnCl2 ( n = 3, > 3). SnCl2 is obtained by reacting SCl2 with excess H2S or H2Sn at -80°C. Its structure is thought to be Cl- SSn -S- Cl . S3Cl2 is a yellow liquid. Melting point -46°C. Density 2.63 g cm -3 . Other known species include S4Cl2 and S5Cl2 .
