Chimbote (English spelling)

Japanese: チンボテ(英語表記)Chimbote
Chimbote (English spelling)
A city in the northwest of Ancash Department in central Peru. It is a port city facing Chimbote Bay, about 400 km north-northwest of the capital Lima, and is located south of the mouth of the Santa River, which flows down from the Andes. Since its founding in 1822, it was just a small fishing village for a long time, but since the construction of a steelworks and a fishmeal factory in the mid-20th century, it has rapidly developed and is now the largest city in the department. Fishmeal, fish oil, ore, machine parts, cast iron, sugar cane, cotton, rice, etc. are shipped from the port. It was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1970, but has since been rebuilt and modernized as a model city. The Pan-American Highway passes through it. It is the starting point of a railway that extends to Wayanca in the Andes. Population: 296,600 (1990 estimate).
