A third-century bishop of Antioch who preached the doctrine of adoption. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Samosata, Syria (now Samsat, Turkey). He became bishop of Antioch around 260, but was deposed in 268 on suspicion of heresy as a result of two or three bishop's councils held there. He had also served Queen Zenobia of Palmyra prior to that. According to Paul, Jesus was a mere human being, but received the power of God's dynamis (spiritual power), became one with the Logos, and was adopted by God.
