Lin Daiyu (English name)

Japanese: 林黛玉 - りんたいぎょく（英語表記）Lín Daì yù

A key character in the Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber, set in the Qing dynasty. Born in Jiangnan as the daughter of a high-ranking official. Having lost her mother at a young age, she was left in the care of her mother's family, the Jia family, in the capital, and raised under the protection of her grandmother, Shi. She was attracted to her cousin Jia Baoyu from the Jia family from the moment they first met, and this was only natural, as Jia Baoyu was the reincarnation of the heavenly attendant Shenying, and Lin Daiyu was the reincarnation of Jiangzhucao. Jiangzhucao, who was transformed into a woman after being showered with nectar by the attendant, volunteered to follow him down to the mortal world and return his tears in order to repay his kindness.

中国，清代の小説《紅楼夢》の主要人物。高級官僚の令嬢として江南に生まれ。幼時に母を亡くしたため，都にある母の実家賈（か）家に預けられ，祖母の史氏の庇護（ひご）のもとで育つ。賈家の従兄賈宝玉とは初対面のときからひかれあうが，それも道理，賈宝玉は天界の神瑛（しんえい）侍者の，また林黛玉は絳珠草（こうじゆそう）の生れ変りであり，侍者に甘露を注がれて女体に変じえた絳珠草は，後を追って下界に下り涙を返すことで大恩に報いたいと志願したのであった。
