Sebastes matsubarae (red fish)

Japanese: アコウダイ(緋魚) - アコウダイ（英語表記）Sebastes matsubarae

A deep-sea fish of the Scorpaenidae family (illustration). It is also called Akou, Menuke, or Menuki. Its closely related species are Ousaga, Sankou Menuke, and Bara Menuke, and are often collectively called Menuke. It is found off the coast of Ibaraki and Kochi prefectures on the Pacific coast, and off the coast of Niigata and Yamaguchi prefectures on the Sea of Japan coast, and is caught in large quantities in the deep waters of Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay. It lives in deep-sea reef areas, has a bright red body color, and often has a large black spot on its back. It grows to a total length of 60 cm or more. It is said to migrate to shallow areas of 200 to 300 m to spawn from December to April, but lives at depths of 600 to 700 m during other seasons.

カサゴ目フサカサゴ科の深海魚（イラスト）。アコウまたはメヌケ，メヌキなどともいわれる。近縁種にオウサガ，サンコウメヌケ，バラメヌケがおり，一括してメヌケと呼ばれることが多い。太平洋側では茨城県から高知県沖，日本海側では新潟県から山口県沖に分布し，とくに相模湾や駿河湾の深所で多獲される。深海の岩礁地帯にすみ，体色は鮮やかな赤色で，しばしば背中に大きな黒斑をもつのが特徴。全長60cm以上になる。12～4月ごろまでの間は水深200～300mのやや浅いところに移動し産卵するとされているが，他の季節には水深600～700mの深所にすむ。
