A major electronic parts manufacturer. Formerly the world's largest manufacturer of ferrite and magnetic tape, the company's main sources of revenue are magnetic heads for hard disk drives and ceramic capacitors. In 1935, Tokyo Denki Kagaku Kogyo was established with the aim of commercializing the world's first ferrite core, invented by Yogoro Kato and Takeshi Takei (both PhDs from the Tokyo Institute of Technology). The company grew rapidly because ferrite was an important material for televisions and radios. It later expanded its business to ceramic capacitors and magnetic tape manufacturing, and grew to become the world's top brand in cassette tapes and video tapes. Since expanding into Taiwan in 1968, it has established production bases overseas, including in the United States, Korea, and Mexico, transforming into an international company. In 1983, the company was renamed to its current name.
