Year of death: March 16, 1871 (May 5, 1871) Year of birth: 1820.7.10 A Dutch interpreter and English scholar in the late Edo period. His first name was Einosuke, his given name was Kennao, and his pen name was Chayama. Born in Nagasaki, he became the lowest ranking junior interpreter in 1837, and in 1848 he learned English from the American drifter MacDonald. In 1849 he co-edited the English Language Dictionary Wako with Nishi Yoshibei and others, but the project was discontinued. He was involved in diplomacy with Russian envoy Putyatin in 1851, American envoy Perry in 1854, Consul Harris in 1854, Takeuchi's European envoy in 1861, the Joi Incident, and the opening of the port of Hyogo in 1868. He was the head of the Hyogo magistrate's control group.
