…In the Elizabethan era, it was common to print and sell short songs about current affairs, and these were called broadside ballads. Since Parsi, there have been many attempts to collect and record traditional ballads, but the most well-known is the compilation by Francis J. Child (1825-96), a professor at Harvard University in the United States at the end of the 19th century, and since then, research on English ballads has usually relied on Child's classification. His collection includes 305 ballads on a variety of subjects, including the sacraments of Christ, historical events, outlaw stories, and love stories. …
