〘 noun 〙① A play performed only by women. Also, the theater company that performs it. ⇔ Male-only plays. ※Kokin Yakusha Daizen (1750) vol. 4 "Women's plays (women's plays) began around the Eiroku period." ② In particular, Kabuki plays performed only by women that were born in the middle of the Meiji period. The troupes of Ichikawa Kumehachi and Nakamura Kasen are famous. ※Meiji Sekai Hyakuwa (1936) <Yamamoto Shogetsu> Women's plays are a product of the Meiji period. "Even the most skilled spectators were astonished, saying that women's plays cannot be made fun of."
