[Born] Tenchi 1 (662) [Died] 4/13/689. Son of Emperor Tenmu of Yamato, Asuka. His mother was Empress Jito. His other name was Prince Hinameshi. At the time of the Jinshin War, he left Yoshino and headed east with Emperor Tenmu at the age of 11. In 681, he became the crown prince, but after the death of Emperor Tenmu, the Empress (Empress Jito) chose to appoint the prince as the new emperor, and did not allow the prince to ascend to the throne, due to the rebellion of Emperor Tenmu's third son, Prince Otsu. The prince died while the appointive status continued. Kakinomoto no Hitomaro's funeral poem for Prince Hinameshi, which expresses his sorrow over his death, is included in the Manyoshu. Emperor Monmu, who followed Empress Jito, was the second son of the prince, and after the death of Emperor Monmu, the prince's wife, Princess Abe, ascended to the throne as Empress Genmei, and the prince's first daughter ascended to the throne as Empress Gensho. In the year 758, he was posthumously named Emperor Okanomiya-no-shita-shiro-shimeshi-sumera-mikoto, but he is not included in the list of successive emperors established in the Meiji period.
