It refers to the days of the Dragon (Tatsu) in January, the Ox (Ushi) in February, the Dog (Inu) in March, the Sheep (Hitsuji) in April, the Rabbit (U) in May, the Rat (Ne) in June, the Rooster (Tori) in July, the Horse (Uma) in August, the Tiger (Tora) in September, the Pig (I) in October, the Monkey (Saru) in November, and the Snake (Mi) in December. It can be seen in diaries from the Heian period, and going out or sowing seeds on this day was avoided as it was considered unlucky.
