American jazz pianist and composer. He was one of the jazz musicians who created bop, a new style of modern jazz, in New York in the 1940s. While his contemporaries D. Gillespie and C. Parker excelled in fast and complex melodies, he was characterized by his simple and original approach. In 1944, he participated in a recording with Coleman Hawkins and others. After that, he led his own combo and explored new possibilities, and in the late 1950s, he gained a great deal of support through his collaborations with J. Coltrane, among others. His representative songs include "Round Midnight" and "Straight No Chaser".

Monk

A British soldier who contributed to the realization of the Restoration of the Monarchy. As a young man, he fought on the continent, mainly in the Netherlands, and returned to England in 1639. During the Puritan Revolution, he initially joined the royal army, but was defeated in 1644 and imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he switched sides to the side of Parliament. He gained Cromwell's trust during his expeditions to Ireland and Scotland, and was appointed commander-in-chief of the Scottish army in 1651. He commanded a fleet in the First War against the Netherlands. In the chaos that followed Cromwell's death, he led an army into London, negotiated with Charles I in exile, and convened a provisional parliament to prepare for the Restoration of the Monarchy. For his achievements, he became Duke of Albemarle, and also fought in the Second War against the Netherlands, commanding a fleet.

英国の軍人，王政復古の実現に功績があった。若いときにネーデルラントを中心に大陸で戦い，1639年帰国。ピューリタン革命においては最初は国王軍に参加したが，1644年敗れてロンドン塔に投獄されて議会側に転向。アイルランド，スコットランドへの遠征でクロムウェルの信任をえて，1651年スコットランド軍総司令官に任じられた。第１次対オランダ戦争においては艦隊を指揮。クロムウェル死去後の混乱に際して軍を率いてロンドンに入り，亡命中のチャールズ１世と交渉し，仮議会を招集して王政復古に備えた。その功により，アルベマール公爵となり，第２次対オランダ戦争においても艦隊を指揮して戦った。
