A canal in the Netherlands. It starts at Gorinchem on the Merwede (part of the lower Rhine-Maas) and connects to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near Utrecht. It is 36 km long and can handle ships of up to 2,000 tons. It was originally planned as a 71 km canal connecting Amsterdam and the Rhine-Maas (completed in 1895), but when the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal was completed in 1938, the 35 km section between Amsterdam and Utrecht was incorporated into the new canal, which was widened and remodeled.
