A deciduous climbing woody plant of the Vitaceae family. It is found from North America to Mexico, but is also cultivated in Europe and Japan, where it is grown on fences and walls. It grows by wrapping itself around other objects with branched tendrils that have suckers. The leaves have long stalks and are usually palmately compound leaves consisting of five leaflets, each with a sawtooth. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful red. Around July, a cyme blooms at the top of the stem. The fruit is a berry that ripens blue and contains 2 to 3 seeds. There are many variations in the shape of the leaf sawtooth and tendrils.
