...A city in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany. From 1953 to 1990 it was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. Population 274,000 (1995). During the time of its formation as East Germany it was one of the country's largest industrial cities, accounting for 3% of the country's industrial production. It is a railway and highway hub. Since gaining autonomy in 1165, it flourished in the 16th century as the largest linen-weaving town in the Electorate of Saxony. In the mid-16th century, G.
