…The mechanism of the reaction that converts the energy of oxidation-reduction into the energy of ATP synthesis has long been a mystery. However, in 1966, P. Mitchell proposed the chemiosmotic hypothesis, which is based on two points: (1) H ⁺ is transported unidirectionally from one side of the membrane to the other as the respiratory chain electron transport reaction proceeds, and (2) the resulting uneven distribution of H ⁺ becomes the energy source for ATP synthesis (see figure). After about 10 years of debate, this original theory was accepted, and Mitchell received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1978. …
