...Dance music that became very popular in the United States in the early 1960s and spread to Europe, Japan, and other places. Black guitarist Hank Ballard wrote a song called "The Twist" and released a record in 1959, but it didn't catch on at the time. A year later, black new singer Chubby Checker recorded the same song, and it started to become popular after TV host Dick Clark promoted it on his show. It quickly spread to Paris, and the popularity of the song there was widely reported in the United States, sparking a full-scale twist boom in 1962. ...
