This is a collection of biographies of Zen monks written in 1678 (Enpo 6) by the Zen monk Mangenshiban of the Myoshinji sect after he spent over 30 years collecting material. It consists of 41 volumes and was first published in 1706 (Hoei 3). Enpo is the era name when it was completed, and Dento means to convey the truth of enlightenment. It includes the deeds of about 1,050 Zen monks, as well as phrases and expressions used when they attained enlightenment (kaigo). It also includes biographies of Zen practitioners such as the Emperor and Sosho Koji, as well as excerpts of koseki and miscellaneous writings by famous Zen monks, and its format is modeled after Chinese works such as the Jingde Chuandeng Lu.
