Born: November 18, 1899, Budapest
[Died] March 12, 1985. Philadelphia. American conductor born in Hungary. He learned the violin from his father and entered the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest at the age of five, studying under Jene Hubay and earning the nickname of a child prodigy. After graduating at the age of 14, he became a professor of violin at the same academy at the age of 17, and participated in European concert tours. In 1921, he moved to New York and became concertmaster at the Capital Theater. He began working as a conductor in 1930. He conducted the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1936, and served as principal conductor and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1938 to 1980. Ormandy's rich sound, centered on late romantic and early modern music, which he was good at, was called the Philadelphia sound and was highly acclaimed.

ハンガリー生れのアメリカの指揮者。父からバイオリンの手ほどきを受け,5歳でブダペスト王立音楽院に入学,イエネ・フバイに師事し,神童と呼ばれる。 14歳で卒業後,17歳で同学院のバイオリン教授に就任,ヨーロッパ演奏公演に参加する。 1921年ニューヨークに渡り,キャピタル劇場のコンサート・マスターに就任。 30年から指揮者として活躍。 31~36年ミネアポリス交響楽団で指揮をとり,38~80年フィラデルフィア管弦楽団の首席指揮者兼音楽監督をつとめる。オーマンディの得意とする後期ロマン派や初期近代派を中心とした豊かなサウンドは,フィラデルフィア・サウンドと呼ばれ高い評価を得た。
