Two versions of Rembertus Dodonaeus's Herbarium Cruydt-Boeck (1554) were imported to Japan, a Dutch edition published in 1618 and another in 1644, and it is clear at a glance that beautiful cherry blossoms were in bloom in the Netherlands (Dodonaeus was a professor of medicine at Leiden University) before the 16th century. Ono Ranzan must have had a look at Dodonaeus' Herbarium, which was presented to the shogunate by the Dutch trading post chief Wagenal in March 1659 (Manji 2), at the medical school in Edo or somewhere, and therefore could confidently state that "there are cherry blossoms in the red-haired area." …

…○どゝにうす，図あり〉と明言している。ドドネウスRembertus Dodonaeus《草木誌Cruydt‐Boeck》(1554)は，日本へはオランダ語版1618年刊と1644年刊と2種類のものが入ってきており，一目瞭然（りようぜん），16世紀以前のオランダ(ドドネウスはライデン大学医学教授であった)に美しいサクラが咲いていた事実がわかる。1659年(万治2)3月に和蘭（オランダ）商館長ワーヘナルが幕府に献上したドドネウス《草木誌》を，小野蘭山は，江戸の医学館かどこかで手に取りたしかめたから，自信をもって〈紅毛には桜あり〉といい切ることができたのであろう。…
