Mountain stream engineering, also known as mountain stream sabo, is a construction method aimed at storing sediment flowing from upstream in mountain streams, preventing vertical and horizontal erosion of mountain streams, and preventing the re-flow of sediment already deposited on the riverbed. It is broadly divided into sabo dam construction and channel construction. Depending on the purpose, checkdams include spur fixed dams, dams to prevent vertical erosion, dams to prevent riverbed sediment outflow, and dams to prevent debris flow. In order to fully demonstrate their effectiveness, checkdams are often built in multiple steps. Recently, sabo dams with steel grids and slits as structural features have appeared.

　渓流工事は渓流砂防ともいい，渓流において，上流から流出してくる土砂の貯留，渓流の縦･横浸食の防止，あるいはすでに河床に堆積している土砂の再流出の防止などを目的とした工法であり，砂防ダム工と流路工に大別される。砂防ダムcheckdamはその目的によって山脚固定ダム，縦浸食防止ダム，河床堆積物流出防止ダム，土石流対策ダムなどがあり，それらの効果を十分発揮できるよう階段状に多数設けることが多い。最近，構造上の特徴として，鋼製格子やスリットを設けた砂防ダムが登場している。…
