An ancient city on the island of Euboea in central Greece. One of the oldest cities in the Euboea region. In the early days, it prospered as a maritime nation, and at one time controlled the islands of Andros, Tenos, and Ceos. At the same time, at the end of the 8th century BC, it repeatedly fought with the powerful neighboring city of Chalcis over the fertile land of Lelanto. Later, the city was destroyed in retaliation by Persia for participating in the Ionian Revolt (499 BC). It was rebuilt and quickly regained its former power, but in the 4th century BC it came under the rule of a tyrant and became subordinate to Macedonia. After the Second Macedonian War (200 BC-197 BC), it was declared a free city by Rome. [Kenji Furukawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
