A former town in Nishiibaraki County, central Ibaraki Prefecture. The Joban Line and Joban Expressway pass through the town. The town produces rice, fruit trees, and vegetables, and also raises livestock. It is one of the prefecture's leading chestnut producers. The strange Akusou Festival is held at Atago Shrine on Mt. 茨城県中部，西茨城郡の旧町。常磐線，常磐自動車道が通じる。米，果樹，蔬菜を産し，畜産も行う。クリの生産では県内有数。愛宕(あたご)山の愛宕神社に奇祭の悪態祭が伝わる。2006年３月西茨城郡友部町と笠間市へ編入。49.93km2。１万6634人（2003）。
