A Korean monk from Goryeo, Korea, and the founder of the Zen sect's Shuzensha Shrine at Mt. Jogye. His common surname was Jeong, and his pen name was Makigushi. He was from Dongju, Hwanghae Province (now Seohung County). His posthumous name was Butsunipusho Kokushi. He entered the Zen sect at the age of eight, and passed the monk's exam in 1182, but abandoned it and instead devoted himself to seeking the truth, shunning fame and fortune. During this time, he deepened his Zen enlightenment at Seigenji Temple, Fumunji Temple, Shangmujuan Temple, and other places, coming into contact with works such as Eneng's Altar Sutra, Li Changja's Avatamsaka Treatise, and Huaiyang's Sayings, and gradually came to be revered by the people.

朝鮮，高麗の僧で，禅宗の曹渓山修禅社の開祖。俗姓は鄭，号は牧牛子。黄海道洞州(現，瑞興郡)の人。諡（おくりな）は仏日普照国師。8歳で禅宗の門に入り，1182年僧科に合格したが，これも捨て，名利を嫌ってひたすら求道に努めた。その間，清源寺，普門寺，上無住庵などで，慧能（えのう）の《壇経》，李長者の《華厳論》，懐譲（えじよう）の《語録》などに接して禅の悟りを深め，しだいに人々の尊崇を受けるようになった。
