1158‐1210 A Korean monk from Goryeo, Korea, and the founder of the Zen sect's Shuzensha Shrine at Mt. Jogye. His common surname was Jeong, and his pen name was Makigushi. He was from Dongju, Hwanghae Province (now Seohung County). His posthumous name was Butsunipusho Kokushi. He entered the Zen sect at the age of eight, and passed the monk's exam in 1182, but abandoned it and instead devoted himself to seeking the truth, shunning fame and fortune. During this time, he deepened his Zen enlightenment at Seigenji Temple, Fumunji Temple, Shangmujuan Temple, and other places, coming into contact with works such as Eneng's Altar Sutra, Li Changja's Avatamsaka Treatise, and Huaiyang's Sayings, and gradually came to be revered by the people.
