The capital of Kermanshah Province in western Iran. Population 692,986 (1996). An old town built by the Sassanid king Bahram IV, it is located on the trade route connecting Iran and Iraq. It has cold winters and very hot summers. It has many Kurdish and Turkish residents and is famous for producing wheat and high-quality wool by nomads. The Nakhtishah oil refinery is located nearby. Ruins from the Sassanid period, such as Tak-i-Bustan (called Tak-e-Bustan in Iran), are scattered around the town.
