Ishikawajima Shipyard

Ishikawajima Shipyard

Japan's first Western-style shipyard was built by the Mito Domain on Ishikawajima at the mouth of the Sumida River in 1853 (Kaei 6) by order of the shogunate. At the time, Ishikawajima was a corner of Tsukudajima in Edo, where a labor camp was located, and the facility was built at the expense of Mito Domain lord Tokugawa Nariaki, who built four sailing ships and one steam gunboat at the end of the Edo period. After the Meiji Restoration, the jurisdiction of the facility was transferred from the Ministry of War to the Ministry of the Navy in 1872 (Meiji 5), and four years later it was sold to a private company and operated as the privately-run Hirano Shipyard under Hirano Tomij. Many merchant ships and warships were built there. In 1893, the company was founded as Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipyard Co., Ltd., in 1945 (Showa 20) it became Ishikawajima Heavy Industries, in 1960 it was renamed Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, and in 2007 (Heisei 19) it was renamed IHI, as it is today.
